Chinese automaker BYD has surpassed Tesla to become the world’s largest seller of electric vehicles, according to recent company disclosures and industry reports published Thursday. The shift reflects strong fourth-quarter sales by BYD across China and overseas markets, while Tesla reported slower growth amid pricing pressure and intensifying global competition.

BYD said deliveries rose sharply in the final quarter of 2025, driven by demand for both battery-electric and plug-in hybrid models, according to company statements. Analysts cited by U.S. and international media said the company’s vertically integrated supply chain and competitive pricing helped it gain market share, particularly in Asia and parts of Europe.

Tesla, which has led global electric vehicle sales for several years, reported lower-than-expected fourth-quarter deliveries, according to regulatory filings and company updates. Executives attributed the results to softer consumer demand in key markets and increased competition, while reiterating plans to focus on cost reductions and new model launches.

Industry data reviewed by multiple outlets show BYD’s global sales edged ahead of Tesla’s during the quarter, marking the first time a Chinese automaker has taken the top spot in worldwide electric vehicle deliveries. Market analysts noted that BYD’s mix of fully electric and hybrid vehicles broadened its appeal during a period of uneven charging infrastructure growth.

Both companies continue to expand internationally. BYD has accelerated exports and announced additional manufacturing investments abroad, while Tesla has signaled further adjustments to pricing and production to defend its position in major markets.

The development underscores intensifying competition in the global electric vehicle sector as governments push for lower emissions and consumers weigh cost, range, and availability.
