TUCSON, Arizona — Law enforcement in Pima County, Arizona, is investigating the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of NBC “Today” show co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, after she was reported missing over the weekend and evidence at her home prompted authorities on Monday to treat the case as a potential crime.
Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said Nancy Guthrie was last seen Saturday evening at her Catalina Foothills residence just north of Tucson and was reported missing by family around noon Sunday after she failed to arrive at her local church. Officials noted her limited mobility and reliance on daily medication, raising concerns for her wellbeing.
Sheriff Nanos told reporters that conditions observed at the home — including indicators that she did not leave on her own — led investigators to designate the residence as a crime scene and involve homicide detectives. Search efforts to locate her have included drones, heat sensors, search dogs and coordination with federal partners, though authorities said they were not currently treating the case as an active threat to the general public.
Police emphasized that Nancy Guthrie, described as mentally sharp but physically vulnerable, has no known cognitive issues that would explain her disappearance. The sheriff’s department urged the public to review surveillance footage and come forward with any information that could assist the investigation.
Savannah Guthrie, a prominent broadcast journalist and lawyer who co-anchors the long-running morning program since 2012, was not present at her anchor desk Monday. In a statement issued by her family, she thanked law enforcement and well-wishers for their support while stressing the family’s focus remains on the safe return of her mother.
Investigators continue to pursue leads as the search persists. Anyone with information on Nancy Guthrie’s whereabouts is asked to contact the Pima County Sheriff’s Department.
